Silver Spring is an immediate suburb of Washington, D.C. In actuality, Silver Spring is a large geographic area comprised of many established thriving neighborhoods. Silver Spring’s communities have a small town feel, all within reach of Washington, D.C.
Both close-in Silver Spring and greater Silver Spring offer a diverse housing stock including single-family homes, apartments, condos, and townhomes along with two adult housing communities, Riderwood and Leisure World. Silver Spring offers a range of single-family homes, everything from colonials to bungalows, ramblers to cape cods. Condos may be located in sleek new buildings or low-rise garden complexes. Downtown Silver Spring is only seven miles from the U.S. Capitol and most Silver Spring addresses are within 15 miles of downtown D.C.
Downtown Silver Spring serves a major regional transportation hub offering access to Metrobus, Ride On bus, MARC commuter train, and Metrorail Red Line. Other Silver Spring area Metrorail stops include Forest Glen, Wheaton, and Glenmont; bus service is widely available and bike shares are also available. The Purple Line light rail is under construction and will extend from Bethesda to New Carrollton, offering several stops in Silver Spring. Silver Spring offers quick and easy access to the Beltway, I-95, Intercounty Connector (ICC), and several other major arteries. All three airports, BWI, Regan National, and Dulles, are within reach.
The heart of downtown offers the Silver Spring Civic Building and Veterans Plaza along with the Ellsworth shopping area including Whole Foods, Stronsnider’s Hardware, DSW and Ann Taylor LOFT. Westfield Wheaton boasts a Macy’s, Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Costco. Restaurants and cafes are numerous and diverse; there are regional and national chains along with family-owned restaurants representing a vast ethnic diversity. Popular dining spots in downtown Silver Spring include Urban Butcher, Olazzo, Mi Rancho, Mrs. K’s Tollhouse, and Buena Vida. The Fillmore and American Film Institute’s Silver Theatre offer great entertainment venues. The downtown area hosts a weekly year-round farmer’s market and two notable festivals, The Silver Spring Jazz Festival and Silverdocs, a documentary film festival.
Silver Spring has an abundance of parkland, which residents enjoy – hiking/biking trails, picnic areas, playgrounds and ball fields are plentiful. Sligo Creek Park, the Capital Crescent Trail, Metropolitan Branch Trail, Rock Creek Park, Jessup Blair Park, Wheaton Regional Park and Brookside Gardens are popular outdoor green spaces.
Several organizations are headquartered in Silver Spring including the United Therapeutics, American Nurses Association, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), U.S. Food & Drug Administration, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and Holy Cross Hospital. The Silver Spring library is located in a state-of-the art building at Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street; other area libraries include Wheaton, White Oak and Long Branch.
